Let's Talk Food

  • The term shelf stable refers to food that is able to survive for a long time. Unlike fresh produce that goes bad within a week or two, this food comes in packaging that lets it stay for a while without spoiling! Because of a longer life, pantry goods are less likely to be chucked in the trash. Avoid creating food waste and opt for food that isn't so time sensitive.

  • Nearly 40% of the food supply in the United States is wasted, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is a staggering 108 billion pounds of perfectly good food that can be saved and redistributed annually. People lose out, but the planet suffers, too. Wasted food means wasted land, water, labor, packaging and fuel, not to mention food dumped in landfills produces harmful greenhouse gas and CO2 emissions. How? Food in landfill doesn’t just turn into soil and give back to the environment. Instead, it decomposes anaerobically which releases harmful methane gasses–28 times more potent than carbon. These greenhouse gasses are contributing to climate change and 8.2% of them come from food waste alone. While it might not seem like it, what you bring into your kitchen really does matter. By shopping with Martie, you are not only shopping smart, you are doing your part in the fight against food waste.

  • Food waste is the excess food meant for human consumption that was removed from the supply chain for various reasons. Waste occurs from spills and spoils in the production process, changes in packaging from manufacturers, or unfortunately, the forgetfulness of the consumer. For more information on food waste, read this blog post,What is food waste, and how to fight it?

  • Here at Martie we value not only being a smart shopper for yourself, but also for the planet. That's why we choose to partner with brands that recognize the importance of being kind to the earth. Buying surplus items is helping the planet but we still want to do MORE! Martie chooses to highlight brands that are plant based, sustainably and ethically produced, or that donate proceeds to environmental causes. You can read more about the brands we feature in our blog series, Beyond The Label, by visitingThe Circular.

  • Martie is in constant communication with different brands and distributors to bring you the best products. In fact, we have new products available on our site everyday! While our store may be made up of surplus items, everything is perfectly safe to eat. We rescue these abandoned foods and quickly give them a new home, so you never have to worry about the quality of your order.

  • To start, let’s clear one thing up. The USDA doesn't even mandate food packaging to have an expiration date (unless its infant formula or medicines). So, when you see a date on a food item, it’s because these dates are a great marketing tool and force consumers to keep buying more goods. Most often, the food inside that packaging is perfectly edible and nutritious. As there is no legislation around these labels, it’s important to be smart and use your eyes, ears and nose when determining if an item is still safe to eat. Best if used by, is the date at which producers believe that product to be at its peak quality. This is not an end all be all date, it's rather to let you know when that product will be at its yummiest! For all foods, especially shelf stable foods, if a date has passed, don’t get spooked. Most food is perfectly safe and delicious, but of course we recommend that you always use your best judgment. To learn more about our take on these dates, read up at Expiration Explained and Going going gone?

  • No! At Martie, we’re looking to do our part by selling “short-coded” packaged foods. These are items whose best by dates have not been passed, but won't get purchased by supermarkets because stores are afraid that worried consumers won't buy them. None of the food we sell has passed its best by date. Some might be getting close, but not expired!

  • That ‘sustainable’ tag on your food means that the ingredients were farmed with the environment in mind. The goal is to minimize the impact on the planet and improve the social and ethical issues that are present in current day farming. Sustainably produced items look to conserve resources and energy and are  non polluting. You can feel good about purchasing sustainably sourced products because they prioritize environmental and social concerns above economic ones.

  • While we are big believers in food banks, so much so that we work with local food banks on a weekly basis. However, food banks alone can’t solve food insecurity, it will take everyone. The truth is, while donating food seems like an easy solution, in practice it isn’t always. There are tax benefits to donating food, but sometimes those tax benefits get used up, and there isn’t much incentive for brands and distributors to take the extra effort to donate food, and perfectly good food can end up going to a landfill. By working with Martie, we are able to help our brands and distributors by quickly and easily distributing food, and helping our Smartie Shoppers who need to save money on their groceries. Our program rescues food who may not otherwise be able to afford high-quality brands.
