Join us as we go beyond the label with food brands that we love at Martie. Today, we chat with Erika Welsh, co-founder of Wild Friends. Based in Portland, OR, Wild Friends makes delicious and natural nut butters with a short list of ingredients and no palm oil. Wild Friends is a certified B-Corp and donates 1% of sales to programs that help ensure women and girls have the environment and empowerment to make their dreams a reality.

What is your motivation behind Wild Friends?
My best friend Keeley and I started Wild Friends in our college apartment in 2011 with the simple idea of making delicious & healthy peanut butters using ingredients we had in our pantry. This simple mission is still the same today. We take pride in making healthy nut & seed butters using ingredients you recognize and can pronounce. Nut butter is our happy food and we know so many people agree! It’s an honor and privilege to make products that people use every day in their meals and snacks!
Which is your favorite Wild Friends nut butter? And what do you like to eat it with?
It’s hard to beat our Classic Creamy Peanut Butter! It’s the perfect peanut butter, in my (biased) opinion ;-). It’s super roasty and flavorful, perfectly salted, made with just 2 simple ingredients (peanuts & sea salt) and has the most incredibly smooth & drizzly texture. I love drizzling it over oatmeal, chia bowls, fruit or a smoothie bowl, like the below!
Fruity Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup frozen mango
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 scoop collagen peptides
- Frozen blueberries, hemp seeds and drizzles of Wild Friends Classic Creamy Peanut Butter
Directions:
- Blend first 4 ingredients in a high-powered blender.
- Top with frozen berries, hemp seeds and peanut butter.
What do expiration dates mean to Wild Friends? Are Wild Friends products still good after their “best by” date?
Our best by date is one year from when it was produced. This is standard in the natural nut butter world. We cannot recommend that our customers eat it beyond this date but from personal experience, I will say that I have eaten it many times and it’s totally fine. That being said, our products really aren’t at their best a year after production, the taste and texture just aren’t the same!
What’s in the pipeline next for Wild Friends?
We are working on a couple new nut butters that we’re planning to launch on our website. Stay tuned!
Why is working with Martie important to Wild Friends?
We are so excited to be working with Martie because there are so many synergies between our companies and brands. Our customers value the same things, and we love their mission of ending food waste and making high quality healthy foods more accessible to everyone.
